Budget Narrative
Our 2020 Budget makes some notable improvements, as well as some special changes with respect to safety.
One of the first changes to the event schedule is to spatially and temporally distance the artists. As the painting will take place on two weekends instead of one, Forward Warrior will be able to double the usefulness of scaffolding, and with some savings, afford lift rentals for key areas.
Projected funds from new grants will also make it possible to distribute limited compensation for the first time. As the project often features dozens of invited artists, and returning alumni who need not RSVP, it is has been difficult to plan for honorariums, and, strictly based on past organizational support, unrealistic.
For 2020, we hope to distribute stipends to 12 or more ’emerging artists’ or first-time Warriors. We have also added small awards to artists in three key locations that require more work, time, and effort to plan & execute. More information is available about 2020 artist payments here: fw/resources/budget-summary#honorarium
As the public event component has been removed, extraneous event application fees and licensing funds were re-directed to security protocols to keep artists distanced and safe. Out of respect for our black & brown participants, we will only be using Atlanta Police if required by law for lane closure permits or traffic control. Unarmed private security that reflects the cultural background of our artists will be hired for crowd control when appropriate.
The third area of change is a transfer of funds towards photography, videography, and webdesign. Forward Warrior can better serve artists and the community with improved digital outreach, thereby expanding geographic impact and bringing the art project to wider audiences, including those who may not be able to otherwise enjoy the mural.
The marquis artists were chosen in the following manner:
1. Wylie @ Powell – The curator and event director decided to offer this space to the artist originally awarded the SE Krog Entrance in 2012, Erin Bassett. We feel her dedication to re-painting the spot every year, despite a discouraging amount of tags and vandalism, earned relocation to a prominent space further from the activity of spray-happy Beltline tourists & OTP edgelords. Erin’s talent is unquestionable, and her ability to execute the square footage and logistics required is well known. Honorarium: $500-700
2. Krog SW Entrance – The event director, after consultation with Cabbagetown Initiative, and the neighborhood organization, learned there is strong neighborhood support for refurbishing the original design by Sam Parker and Peter Ferrari, which was voted to be the logo on the Cabbagetown.com website as recently as 2018. Though Peter is now curator, the neighborhood felt the piece is an important addition to the character of the wall and encourages him to enlist an apprentice or collaborative partner to help continue to maintain and improve the mural. Honorarium: $1000-1200.
3. Krog SE Entrance – Forward Warrior is partnering with ATL1000 (‘Celebrating 1000 Murals in Atlanta’) to form an Artist Selection Panel and release an open RFQ for this spot. Finalists will be paid a small sum to sketch a proposal. The panel will be a diverse group of arts professionals and community leaders, as well as four artists from the newly formed Forward Warrior Advisory Board. Honorarium $1500-2000.
We feel these fees are quite modest, and way below market value for what an artist’s time and talent deserve. It would be great to have more funds in order to fairly compensate work in these three areas, and further reimburse, support, and reward 40-50 other artists expected to participate. We are extremely humbled and forever grateful for the Forward Warrior artists who return annually for no money, and make the experience a valuable opportunity for all involved.
Thanks y’all. You’re literally the best people we know.
